Woman sues doctor Paschalis Tai-Lun Woo and Darling Downs health service after sexual assault

A woman who was sexually assaulted by a former Queensland anaesthetist while unconscious is suing both the doctor and the hospital for $500,000.

The woman, who was one of three women in their 20s assaulted by Paschalis Tai-Lun Woo, says she has suffered profound psychological damage as a result of the assault at Toowoomba Base Hospital.

The Brisbane anaesthetist sexually assaulted and photographed three patients while they were unconscious and in his care between November 2020 and January 2021.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and three counts of recordings in breach of privacy and was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and banned from practising medicine for nine years.

In documents filed to Brisbane’s supreme court in November, the woman, who can’t be named for legal reasons, says she was undergoing a surgical procedure on her left arm under sedation when the assault occurred.

She is suing both Woo and the Darling Downs Health Service for over $500,000 in damages, claiming the hospital failed to properly supervise Woo and breached its duty of care.

The woman’s law firm told 7NEWS.com.au the assault had a “profoundly damaging impact” on their client.

“She has been deeply traumatised by what happened and has developed a chronic psychiatric injury,” they said.

“Our client was in an incredibly vulnerable position, and it’s imperative that better checks and balances are put in place to ensure assaults like this don’t occur in future.”
