Perth man Artemiy ‘Toma’ Stakhanov fighting for life after collapsing in Bali

A Perth man is in a fight for life in a Bali hospital after he collapsed in mysterious circumstances outside his Kuta hotel.

Artemiy “Toma” Stakhanov has been in intensive care since Thursday, when he was rushed to hospital, with doctors still unsure exactly what caused his condition.

He is yet to provide any clues about the lead-up to his emergency because he is yet to regain consciousness.

After a flurry of tests, doctors are leaning towards alcohol poisoning or a bad reaction to alcohol, according to reports.

His mother and a close friend have flown to the holiday island — where the 26-year-old had spent two weeks before falling ill — to be by his side.

“The doctors started the process of taking Toma off of support and out of sedation. Unfortunately, as a result, he went into respiratory distress again, so the doctors are re-stabilising him via intubation,” friend Leilani Reid said.

Stakhanov’s family hope to medevac him back to Australia on Thursday, but without travel insurance, the bills are stacking up.

Hospital charges have already climbed beyond $32,000 and the cost of flying him home is expected to be a further $65,000.

“We all love Toma dearly and wish to see him healthy and whole back home in Australia,” Reid said.

A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help bring him home.

A fundraising event for Stakhanov, a member of the local music and dance scene, will also be held at the Port Beach Brewery in North Fremantle on September 9.
